Check that DEC Unix and Linux both agree on whether they use variable
or fixed block size. AIX and IRIX let you toggle the drive between
variable/fixed block size. I think Linux can do this too, but i am
not sure. If i run into this problem i usually have the tape read
by a RS6000...
