I post my experience with alpha, (if it can help)
i'm running linux on alpha since the debian port was usable.
My hardware is a 21164 at 533 Mhz based on a LX2 Motherboard manufacted by
Digital. I notice the manufacturer, cause it seems that reported problems
with digital card and samsung are diffrents.
full scsi with ncr53c875 ,
ethernet card : 3c590 & dec 21041
external parallel zip drive.
I tried lots of kernel, compiled with : CONFIG_ALPHA_LX164 ,
during working, diffrent locks appears with this configuration,
after some reboots and fsck, i decided to compile kernel with the
CONFIG_ALPHA_EB164 enable, which is a more generic kernel configuration.

would be a LX (but it hangs)
With this configuration the system is really stable, and i can use
diffrent modules. I didn't have problems since this.
for the person who has a problem with zip drive, mine is running with a
modularized kernel :

Next , the PC164 and LX/SX164 diffrences ( according to the
motherboards documentation ), are cache size, ( 2,4Mo etc... ) and some
diffrences in RAM addressing.
For the person who have some problems with X , my Matrox Mystique PCI 4Mo
is running well, with Xfree 3.3.5 with binary AXP ,taking from the
xfree86 site.
I hope that this notifications will help some people. and sorry for this
long post.
