Just a guess:
You didn't compile the kernel with the correct machine type, or if you are
booting from SRM, you didn't enable "boot from SRM" in the kernel.

Or, possibly, I remember my machine would hang about there if I compiled
in frame buffer support, and didn't pass the appropriate parameters to the
kernel on boot.
