alpha support for 'mem=' boot option gone in 2.3??

It seems that alpha no longer supports explicitly sizing memory via 'mem='
in 2.3. Is there a reason for its removal? We find this option useful
when testing kernels and were curious why it is gone. Is there an
alternative mechanism for booting with less memory?
