Generic kernel won't work on Aspen Alpine board

I have a Aspen Alpine, 275 MHz 21064a CPU based alpha machine. (EB64+)
A generic kernel won't boot, it complains about some irq, and I really don't
like to test it
as the firmware settings get erased every time I try booting a generic
kernel. Compiling a
EB64+ kernel works fine.
