Re: Trouble loading RH 6.2 on DEC AlphaServer 1000 4/233

The short question for those of you who are pressed for time is this:
The RedHat 7.0 CD #1 for Alpha contains 3 bootable kernels:
    vmlinux.gz vmlinuz.24 and vmlinuz.j
Searches of RedHat and "All" linux sites failed to turn up any comment or
documentation as to the the function, options, or purpose of vmlinuz.24
Where can I find any information on it?

Now, for those of you interested in knowing why I need to know, here's
the background.
    I have a DEC AlphaServer 1000 4/233 with V5.4-101 firmware and all
the latest I/O option firmware as well. I need to load linux on this
machine. My attempts to load RH6.2 always failed with
aboot: loading compressed kernels/generic.gz...
aboot: ok, now starting the kernel...

halted CPU 0

halt code = 6
double error halt
PC = fffffc000031b24c

The 2.2-16 custom kernel on the jumpstart CD below however would come up
and run and was fully functional in all modes (thanks Dan). After trying
unsuccessfully to get the RH6.2 installation to "use" that kernel instead
I burned a set of RH7.0 cd's. Booting the vmlinux.gz kernel (which is the
only procedure that seems to be documented) did not hang the system but
never came up with the install screen either. No matter if the "console"
was set to a serial or graphical terminal. Booting vmlinuz.j produced
halt code = 6 , double error halt, as above, BUT booting vmlinuz.24 came
up with the RedHat 7.0 install screed! I entered country and language,
but then it asks for the location of the distribution's location (which is
the local CD rom from which the system has just booted) and when I enter
local CD rom it looks at the drive and says that it does not look like a
RedHat tree! Examining the alternate consoles reveals that it is having
trouble mounting it, which is very odd, since I can easily mount it (and
copy it to the hard drive if need be with the JumpStart CD below). I may
have to do that, but I'd like some information of the vmlinuz.24 kernel
first, since really I only booted it out of desperation.

Thanks,

George
