2.4.9ac18 CONFIG_ALPHA_MIATA=y gives keyboard timeout?

I just tried to compile 2.4.9ac18 on my personal workstation 500au.
When I set

CONFIG_ALPHA_MIATA=y

in the .config, the keyboard didn't react on bootup; dmesg told me there
was a timeout.

If I choose

CONFIG_ALPHA_GENERIC=y

my keyboard functions well.

What do I loose by not using CONFIG_ALPHA_MIATA? Should I be using
regular kernels, or is there some special 'alpha-kernel-cvs' like for
parisc workstations?

Thanks,
Jurriaan
