thanks, but I did upgrade and this is what I have:
ii binutils 2.11.92.0.12.3 The GNU assembler, linker and binary utiliti

and it failes to link vmlinux. I tried gcc 3.0. I didn't think it would
work and it didn't. I get an unresolved symbol when it tries to link in
char.o
