Just sort of following up this thread. I didn't end up buying the Lynx
based 2100A. Instead I found a Rawhide 5305 for not much more and
according to Compaq's performance listings this machine with it's 2 CPUs
is still a bit faster than the 2100A's 4.
I use custom install of Linux on my x86 boxes, so I figured I'd do the
same on this one. Years ago I starting with a Slackware install that I
ended up recompiling everything on which eventually became the basis of
what I currently install on x86s. So I figured I'd do the same with this
new machine. I found a site that still had the Slackware Alpha disksets,
and installed the bare minimum to get the machine booting, on the network,
and able to compile code.
I built all the development tools and have started on the kernel. I
figured I'd like to get into some kernel hacking myself. So I grabbed the
2.5.7 release.
As probally most of you know here, 2.5.7 doesn't build on the Alpha. I
did work up a patch (mostly 1 liners) that allowed it to compile, but I
still get errors during the final link with like 5 undefined references.
I've fixed two of those, but haven't gotten to the last 3 yet as they seem
to be a little more complicated.
But anyway, I'm mostly just writing this e-mail to say, hey, I'm on the
list now, and to see where 2.5 support lies with the Alpha.
