I'm using 3 of these now in 3 different systems, including the
Noname. It works very well, no compatibility problems at all. The
Diamond Stealth 64 supposedly outperforms it, but it isn't supported
all that well so it isn't necessarily a good choice from that
perspective.
Mach64 in the FAQ refers to the chipset, since there are several ATI &
OEM boards that use it, and they should all work.
>Does anyone have any favorite keyboards that have the control and escape
I think the Northgate OmniKey has a dip switch to switch the control &
capslock keys. I think they also let you remap other keys, but I know
that the capslock/control swap is supported. There are a few other
reprogrammable keyboards on the market, but I never found one that I
felt had a halfway decent feel. (I didn't do exhaustive research at
the time, so take that with a grain of salt...) I briefly was forced
to use a Gateway keyboard, and I can definitely say--stay far, far
away.
I donno where you're going to put ESC given that most keyboards have
the backquote key in that place these days--moving that to where the
ESC key usually lives would be a major pain.
I use the IBM "Hi, I'm a Selectric & I sound like one" soooper-deluxe
keyboard ("With SoundHoles(tm) for extra keyclick!"). The OmniKey
would be a good choice, but I much prefer the feel of the IBM.
Individual tastes will vary, check before you buy, ask your doctor
for further information about...
My solution for the capslock/control was to remap it in Linux (trivial
to do) and X (easy to do) and not care about DOS (few games use the
control key). Even easier on the Noname, since it doesn't run the
Games Operating System. I do lose big in the OSF/1 console, but then
who would use their crappy console anyway? :-)
I just want to say, officially and for true that I am totally and
miserably unhappy with the Ultrix/OSF1 console drivers. And this from
the company that made the almighty VT100...*sigh* I'd gladly write a
real console for OSF/1 in 2 seconds if I believed DEC would use
it.
Of course, the Linux console is its beautiful self. It is without a
doubt the nicest console I've ever used.
For ESC, the best all-around solution is to use control-leftbracket.
While this may seem painful to learn at first, it will speed up your
typing--most other solutions are going to require moving your hand off
the homerow keys. And, the best part is, it works on every terminal
I've ever used (and I've used far too many--right now I'm switching
between 6 keyboards on a daily basis).
I've gotten out of the habit of using control in the proper place,
because I use too many keyboards that have it in the wrong place these
days...gaaah, I'm babbling.
>Any favorite 3 button mice and/or trackpads?
I used to recommend any of the Logitech mice. I have their el-cheapo
"Basic mouse" model I bought 3-4 years ago, and it's still going
strong, and I have used a few of their others with good success.
Sadly, I've come to prefer the Microsoft (cough, gag) 2-button bent
mouse. It has a nice weight & feel to it. I really miss the 3rd button
a lot, as IMO 2-button emulation in X just doesn't work all that
well. But I don't mind it enough to change to another mouse. I'm not a
heavy GUI user these days anyway, so...
The Logitech trackball dealy isn't too bad, if you like trackballs.
There are certainly other models on the market that work as well if
not better, tho.
All this stuff is personal preference...some people detest heavy rats
& loud clicky typewriter keyboards.
