Cross-Platform dev, Turbochannel, etc.

I was wondering if anyone could point out any good papers that detail
how one should go about doing cross-platform development. I have a
Turbochannel-based Alpha sitting right next to me and it is begging to
be linuxised. My basic plan was to have a look at how NetBSD goes
about talking to Turbochannel devices and porting that code to
linux. My problem is that I don't have a spare pci-based alpha and my
guess is that I will end up having to write and cross-compile most of the
source from my 486. I've never written device drivers before and I
have never done any cross-platform development, but I thought this
might be a good way to learn (If I am being unrealistic, someone
please give me a clue before I go off to fight against windmills.)

Any flames/advice/etc. would be most appreciated.
