I looked into this some time ago and forward a mail from a DEC
engineer to linux-alpha. You can find the mail archived on
www.linux.ncm.com. The subject line is:

[jnelson@zko.dec.com: Re: (plsig 2212) ELF for Alphas?]

This mail basically says that there is no ELF definition for the Alpha
(except for a few DWARF related definitions). I think it would be
rather risky to define our own ELF format. I should hope it is easier
to get ECOFF documentation than defining our own object file format.

I'd love to see ELF support for Linux/Alpha, but it takes some serious
resources to do all the necessary standardization & documentation
work.
