I hope you've been compiling the perl5.001m version, not just the
plain 5.001 since it has bugs which have been corrected. You can get
the latest version of perl5.001m on

ftp.wpi.edu:/perl5/perl5.001m.tar.gz

And we're hoping that one of these days 5.002 will be released.
