Just starting out.... holes to fall into...

I have just been attempting to get Linux up on a no-name box,
working from some stuff an abscent college had been working on.

I hit a few problems, some of which would probably make FAQ questions,
but I though I'd see if someone could answer *why* these things were
happening.

Basically we have a rather shakey system - it feels as though the
disk partitioning is faulty, so I was trying to build a stable system
ionto another disk, and also took the oppotunity to use the redhat
binaries.

Problem #1
----------
Decided I would build a disk on a i386 system, and then take it across
to the noname. Built fine, MILO hung when it tried to read anything
off
a partition.

Problem #2
----------
OK, #1 didn't work, rebuilt the disk on a no-name. Used fdisk/cfdisk
to partition the disk. Read OK from a booted linux, MILO and linux
within boot sequence wouldn't touch it (ie would not mount as root).

Solved these by partitioning with minlabel, but why does cfdisk/fdisk
apparently work, but leave something that MILO cannot get at - it sees
partitions, it just hangs when it tries to access them. minlabel reads
cfdisk partitions and vice versa....

BTW anyone who wants to build a system from redhat, be aware a few
things
are missing.... like cat, fsck, etc (you know, insignificant bits...
:-) ).
However it looks good so far.

Nigel.
