BSD lets people use either one. The have a special character has the
first thing in the passwd field to indicate md5. As long as the system
lets the sysadmin decide what format to store new passwords in it's
not a problem.
Btw, I don't remember which version of BSD did this, though I'd guess
it was FreeBSD.
