OK, but "pre-pre-alpha" is pretty exact... :-)

The available-from-me XFree86 3.1.1 servers on Alpha-Linux are limited to
the S3 one. It's what I had/have, was among the most mature and flexible
ones in there, and it purports to handle such a wide range of S3 chipsets,
it seemed best to try it first. And besides, it supported the #9 GXE cards
in the systems DEC was loaning to Linus and David M-T... :-)

Much of it is compiled "-g -O", so the code quality is prolly quite poor.
I do not know if anyone has actually run "x11perf" on it; I haven't.
Nonetheless, it is quite usable, especially with the 801/928/864/964
chipsets.

I have also tried a Trio64 (764) card, with which the server has proven to
be rather fragile... :-(

Other of the available servers, like the ATI mach32/64 ones, among others,
have been neglected due to initial problems getting the darn things inited.
The ATI ones *NEED* BIOS emulation to get them into the correct state even
for text console; such emulation in MILO was not available at the time work
started on X. And even with the quite competent current MILO BIOS
emulation, neither card is useable for console, unless inited via ARC/SRM
console first (the DEC ARC and SRM consoles have much more mature BIOS
emulation capability, at the moment).

I'm attempting to find the time to start porting the 3.1.2 XFree86 code base,
but as yet haven't gotten very far beyond downloading the TAR file. It *is*
starting to move toward the top of the stack, however, so hopefully, before
the end of the year. Also, DEC is loaning some Alphas to XFree86 to accelerate
the progress and broaden the support.
