You may want to test the software with the FSF's g77 native Fortran
compiler. It may be faster than the f2c output.

Also, a company has been advertising in {Linux Journal} recently a
highly optimised commercial fortran compiler for pentium and alpha
chips. I don't have a copy of the Journal here in the office, but I
can look it up and send you more info if you need. I think the cost
of teh copiler was in the hundreds (as opposed to the thousands).
