This is to announce that another TOTALLY UNSUPPORTED port of XFree86, this
time the 3.1.2 code base, to Alpha-Linux, is now available, at least in part,
on:

gatekeeper.dec.com:pub/DEC/Linux-Alpha/X11

axpbin-XF86_S3-3.1.2-0.2.gz
axpbin-XF86_S3-3.1.2-0.2.readme

axpdiffs-XFree86-3.1.2-0.2.gz

The first file contains the binary of the XF86_S3 server, the second a "readme"
that I'll include at the end of this message.

And the third file, for all who've been agitating for patches so they could
build their *own* favorite server, contains the *actual* diffs used to
generate not only the S3 server, but also the libraries and programs (not
included in this release).

The S3 server has appeared to run fine on 928/764/864/968 chipsets.

Note that the S3 server run on the Trio32 (732) chipset, as least with the
Diamond Stealth SE, has font problems, perhaps caching.

Note also that the diffs will allow the Mach64 server to build, but it has
some severe problems with fonts, caching also, I think, that prevent it from
being usable.

Note that the ONLY servers built with the patches are S3 and Mach64.

Part of the build, namely "twm", is sensitive to the presence of a working
"sed"; get the latest from ftp.azstarnet.com:pub/linux/axp/misc.

Currently, the "xterm" built crashes with a problem in the Input Methods
area, about which I haven't a clue. If built *without* I18N, it seems fine;
it'll even allow you to invoke it with the "-sb" option... :-)

Thanks to the XFree86 folk, for making my job both easy and rewarding, and
to Linus Torvalds for contributing some quick "memcpy" code that really
helps performance on the slower chipsets.

================

This archive contains an unsupported release of the XFree86-3.1.2 S3 Xserver
as ported to the DEC Alpha running Linux.

This Xserver seems to be working fine on a number of cards, baseed on the
following chipsets: 928, 764, 864, 968. Thanks to XFree86 for the enhanced
support!

A number of things have been fixed for the Alpha, beyond the last release of
this server based on XFree86 3.1.1, namely BIOS access and linear aperture
(although I think the latter actually did work before... :-).

There is an accompanying set of diffs which were used to rebuild not only
the S3 server, but also the libraries and programs (but those are not part
of this release).

Good luck!
