1 -- RED HAT LINUX AXP FEATURES
-------------------------------
The installation for Red Hat Linux/AXP makes Alpha machines as easy
to install as Intels have been. You have the flexibility to install
from NFS, CD-ROM, or a local hard drive. Networking, time, and keyboard
configuration are all part of the install.
After installing Red Hat Linux/AXP once, you will never need to reinstall
Linux again! Our RPM packaging system is sophisticated enough to
allow upgrading to new Red Hat releases without reinstalling your
system - no partitioning, no backing up all your files, no headaches.
Also included are all the popular Red Hat graphical control panel
utilities that have simplified system administration for Red Hat users
for over a year.
. powerful RPM packaging system
. easy to use GLINT graphical package administration tool
. compliant with version 1.2 of the Linux File System Standard
. graphical installation (text based install also supported)
. important packages and versions:
XFree86 (Alpha port) 3.1.1
Apache httpd server
Perl 5
Tcl 7.4 / Tk 4.0
Python 1.2 w/ Tk 4.0 support
GCC 2.7.0
Linux kernel 1.3.43 (slightly patched)

A list of all of the included packages is at the end of this announcement.

2 -- RPM Packaging System
-------------------------
Red Hat Linux 2.1 is built on an entirely new second generation packaging
system called RPM. The RPM system combines features of the Red Hat
RPP system and the BOGUS pms and pm systems, and adds many advanced
features of its own, including smart config file handling across
package upgrades, "shared" file handling, documentation searching
support, and package installation via FTP. You can install,
uninstall, query, verify, and upgrade individual RPM packages.
The Red Hat web site, http://www.redhat.com, contains more information
on RPM and the RPM-HOWTO, which describes how to use RPM and build
your own RPM packages.
A new graphical package management tool called GLINT allows you to
quickly and easily manage and track your system. Glint is a vast
improvement over our previous Linux Installation Manager (LIM) -- it
is much faster, displays a hierarchy of packages represented by
individual package icons, and has displays progress meters during
installation.
The source packages include pristine, untouched sources, as well as
patches and a control file which defines the building and packaging
process. This system was conceived and promoted by the BOGUS
distribution development team: Rik Faith, Doug Hoffman, and Kevin
Martin.
We are releasing RPM under the terms of the GPL and we would like to
encourage everyone to use it to package their software. You can get
RPM separately from Red Hat Linux from any of the official Red Hat FTP
mirror sites.

3 -- FTP AVAILABILITY
---------------------
Red Hat Linux/AXP 2.1 and the Red Hat HOWTO, will be available from:
ftp://ftp.pht.com/pub/linux/redhat-2.1-axp-beta
Note that floppy and FTP installations are not currently supported
by this BETA release.
Red Hat Linux/AXP 2.1 will be available via ftp shortly. Our net
connection is currently a 28.8 modem, which won't be able to stand
the strain. We are in the process of upgrading to a T1 and expect
to finished within the next two weeks.

4 -- SUPPORT POLICIES
---------------------
On our web site and official Red Hat mirror sites you will find the
Red Hat FAQ, which probably answers most of your questions. Check it
out first!
If you purchase a Red Hat CD-ROM product you get 30 days of
installation support via email. If you download Red Hat via FTP, or
purchase a non-Red Hat Software CD-ROM with Red Hat Linux on it, you
don't get any official support, and you will have to get support
through the Red Hat AXP mailing list. Everyone who uses Red Hat AXP should
be on the list! We use the list as a primary avenue for support, and all
our announcements are sent to the list.
To subscribe, send mail to axp-list-request@redhat.com with the
word "subscribe" in the subject line of the message. Additional lists
are rehat-list (for general Red Hat discussions), redhat-devel,
redhat-announce, redhat-digest (a digest version of redhat-list),
and rpm-list, which can be subscribed to in a similar fashion.
Please note that this is a BETA release of Red Hat Linux/AXP. As such,
users should expect to encounter more problems with this Red Hat product
release then our other offerings.
The Red Hat Support program is not available for this BETA release do
to the rapidly changing state of Linux on the Alpha.
