mods and doubles

I am having some trouble with the modulo operator.
Whenever I try to step through an instruction with "%"
in it, gdb-4.14 takes off and continues until it hits another
breakpoint.

Also I noticed some floating point exceptions on the console
when building gcc-2.7.2.

And one final bit of strangeness, with doubles.
double foo, bar;
...
foo += bar;
Sometimes I get floating point exceptions on the increment.
