For what it's worth, on a Multia with a fairly recent linux, I
multiply two 256 by 256 matrices in approximately
3.4 seconds compiled with gcc
2.5 sec. compiled with cc -migrate under OSF/1
That should be around 10 and 13 Mflops respectively.
(The multia has a 166Mhz 21066 and 24Mb RAM)
