binutils-2.6 is now available for Linux/Alpha. The files are:

2715098 Dec 19 14:25 axpbin-binutils-2.6axp.tar.gz
11965 Dec 19 14:35 axpsrc-binutils-2.6axp.patch.gz

in directory ftp://ftp.azstarnet.com/pub/linux/axp/misc.

I encourage everybody to try this out and let me know if there is any
problem. I'm working with the Cygnus folks to get the patches into
their sources so if this version works all right, then hopefully
future binutils releases will build and work out of the box for
Linux/Alpha.

However, be sure you keep a backup copy of your old binutils just in
case something goes really bad.

This release has a number of fixes:

- strip seems to work now (quickstrip no longer needed)
(must have been the Cygnus folks that fixed this one,
so, thanks!)
- linker now always tries to use a single gp, if it can't,
it issues a warning and uses multiple gp values; this
means that the .set singlegp is no longer needed in
arch/alpha/kernel/entry.S; for now, gas continues to
accept it, but I think this is going to change soon
- various fixes to gas
- gas now accepts (and ignores! :-) the .eflag directive
(this is needed to support fully IEEE-compliant math
with the forthcoming gcc)
- many fixes to the disassembler

I think that's about it.

Have fun,
