More on compile performance

I ran a complete kernel compile (1.3.54) outside of X. It took 37 minutes
on my Noname. I then started another compile under X, but with no additional
load other than oclock. I killed it after 2 hours when it had only reached
compiling the sound driver. There was lots of swapping going on.
Undoubtedly I need more memory. I'm going to try a test under an earlier
kernel, if I can unpatch my sources to build a previous version.
