After saying bad things about 1.3.53-56, I shall be the first to give
praise to 1.3.57: performance-wise, it works like a charm! Kernel
compile time is just very slightly higher compared to 1.3.52 (maybe 10
seconds out of 9 minutes), but what's really neat is that with 1.3.57
I can have a kernel compile going and at the same time edit with Emacs
and not notice the kernel compile at all. Well done!

More on the SCSI driver: I can reproduce kernel crashes by extracting
stuff from the CD-ROM onto the hard drive. This happens both with
1.3.52 and 1.3.57 and presumably everything inbetween. Erik says that
1.3.52 works fine with the old SCSI driver (the one that can't do
synchronous SCSI). In any case, this is something that needs to be
fixed ASAP. I'm in a time crunch so I can't promise anything as to
when I'll get to it. But it's at the top of my list...
