I do that for non-trivial things. sysklogd, for example, is trivial.
Recompiling it on any system will be about just as fast as downloading
the binary. Besides, BLADE_0.3 doesn't follow the FSSTND whereas Red
Hat does, so the location of log and lock files will be different.
Also, since the Red Hat folks (Erik, notably) do such a great job at
putting together binary distributions, I also think there is less need
for me to do so myself (I'd rather spend time doing new stuff). I
don't see why you wouldn't want to use the Red Hat binary packages
even if you run BLADE0.3, it's a simple matter of:
rpm2cpio RPM-file | cpio --extract --verbose --make-dir
once you have the rpm utilities installed (a matter of 10 minutes).
Of course, due to different fs layout conventions, you might need to
add a few symlinks to make BLADE FSSTND compatible, but that you'd
have to do even with my binary distributions.
Fred> PS (times()): Was it a missing 's' in the library sources

I'm not sure what you mean. My current sources look OK and I know
they work in GNU libc, but maybe I'm missing something since I haven't
actually tried the new times() in libc-0.4x.

I don't *know* of any incompatibilities but it wouldn't surprise me if
there were some. I'm sorry, but I never had BLADE installed on any on
my systems.
