make zImage??

Hi All,
I downloaded 1.3.85 from Linus' site yesterday, installed the
sources, make config, and make dep. Now the problem, "make zImage" says no
rules were found, so I tried "make boot" which dies near the end with
tulip.? errors, so then I tried "make bootimage" which dies immediately
with a 16 bit overrun error. So will the real make command please step
forward? BTW I have a Cabriolet w/TGA running X/Linux.
