kernel questions

First off tulip.c will NOT compile(I'm just confirming:) So I am trying
the DE4x5.c. I have a DE435 netcard and a DEC21040 controller card.
1) Does anyone have the above cards, kernel support for only
DE4x5 and not tulip.c, and a working network?

I have a NCR53c810 SCSI Host Adapter, when "make boot" hits this section
it tries to " | perl script_asm.pl ".
2) Do I need perl to compile my kernel?

(At least I am learning something from all of this)
