I will be the first to say that I *personally* think it's an excellent
idea, but I must also note that Eric's machine is aptly named for such
a project--that is to say, expect a visit from Intel's goonsquad sooner
or later. (I got one, and you can read a little bit about it at the
Tasty Bits archive, http://www.atria.com/~dawson/tbtf/archive/0073.html .
Ironically enough, today was the deadline for my response to the goo--
err, I mean, lawyers'--letter.)

History as I know it: SSC/Linux Journal bundled a sticker with an early
version of the logo with one of the first few issues of the magazine, and
I think InfoMagic did the same with one of their CD-ROMs. There are at
least four Linux Inside designs to be found on the net right now, and I'm
assuming one of the two commonly rendered in red and black is the original
logo or based on a scan of the sticker. The other red-and-black one is
similar but with "LINUX" printed horizontally in block capitals. Both are
rarely seen at larger than about 64x64.

I like to think that the one I created is much nicer (he said, without a
trace of modesty :-) ), and on the basis of an AltaVista search for all
"linuxinside" images, it appears that at least 40 or 50 other people do,
too. It probably helps that I made available a version at 800x700, plus
smaller ones with transparency and muted colors for backgrounds, etc.
Anyway, the image is still out there in lots of places, but it's not on
my Linux Logos web page any more. (I'm thinking of another design, but
alas, it's not Linux-specific...)

Anyway, I just thought a heads-up was called for. Feel free to go ahead
with the project anyway if you wish, or not if you don't. I still believe
my design was covered under the Fair Use provisions of trademark law, but
I don't have the time or bucks to find out for sure in court.

Regards,
