MILO "#####length error-halting"

I got hold of an Alpha PC64 based machine to play around with Linux. I
installed MILO from the NT arc firmware without problems. MILO reported
an error with the NVRAM but I guessed that wasn't too important. I tried
booting the cabriolet kernel with

MILO> boot fd0:vmlinux.gz root=/dev/fd0 ramdisk=1440

In response I got a line of #'s and then this

##########length error - halting

MILO reset and I was back where I started.

I couldn't find any information on this type of problem in the Alpha and
MILO documentation. Can anyone help me out ?

(The machine being used was bought in parts from DEC's OEM in the UK and
assembled by a reseller. This reseller normally installs DEC UNIX on
their machines.)

Thanks in advance,
Mark.
