Libm

Apparently, the FSF is going to use a new math library called fdlibm
(freely distributable you-know-what) originally developed by Sun. It is
available from netlib (ftp://netlib.no/netlib/fdlibm/).

The files are all copyright 1993, and I'm hesitant to trust files that
old -- coming from the Linux community, I expect at least one release a
week. Anybody know of any newer source? I'll do some benchmarking --
where can I find the original libm for linux in source form, btw?

Anyway, I just had a quick looksie at the square root function, and it
seems to be a bit by bit implementation (now why would that be more
portable, I wonder?) However, two other schemes are sketched up in the
comments, and implementing one of them should be simple enough.

Well, it's time for bed - will look at things tomorrow.
