Jensen 3GB SCSI disk not recognized, causes Kernel panic

Hello all,

I have a severe problem here with a Jensen (DEC AXP150)
with a Adaptec 1740 SCSI controller. my first disk is an
IBM 1 GB disk (/dev/sda), and the second one is a QUANTUM
FIREBALL 3,2 GB disk (/dev/sdb).

whenever I try to access the 3,2 GB disk, I get severe
problems.

sometimes, I cannot even get into fdisk for changing partitions
or anything else, its nearly impossible to do something about it.

When I use fdisk and try to clear the partition table, for
example, I get the following SCSI lockup:

scsi: aborting command due to timeout: pid 9282, scsi0, channel 0, id1,
lun0, Read(6) 00 00 02 0e 00
scsi host 0 abort (pid 9285) timed out - resetting
scsi bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0

....

(this continues forever with changing pid's)

I already low-level formatted the drive on another PC with
an adaptec 2940 controller, and the disk
works flawlessly under Windows NT and DOS + Windows 95.

I am using RedHat 4.0, and already upgraded to kernel 2.0.28,
but this changed nothing.

If I get these errors I cannot do anything anymore, just switch off.

Does anyone have some clues what I could do about this,
where to even start for anything that could help me out ?

please email-CC to thomas@tekelec.de, since I do not read the
mailing list, as there are so many messages I cannot grep through
all of them.

Thanks,
Thomas.
