I just got an IBM DORS-32150 in SCSI-Ultra-Wide, and it works
flawlessly with the 1742. However, when I plug my external SCSI Box
in, which contains two devices, I get problems on reading the other
disk (some Conner device). Doesn't matter if the box is switched on or
not. Physically removing the external bus helps. I assume this is
because I didn't bother to remove the internal termination of the
1742, which generally works, but is not the correct way [0] With a
total of 6 devices on the bus, I assume correct termination is
mandatory.

So, I recommend to check the termination of the devices[2]. OTOH, it is
known that Quantum screwed the SCSI interface on Fireball disks (the
EIDE versions show faster transfer rates). Maybe there's a problem
especially with the Fireball disk.

[0] But I am to lazy to do it, and to greedy to by an external high
density terminator ;-) [1]).
[1] The whole setup works great as long as I don't use the second
disk, which only holds some old NT anyhow ... not worth the effort.
[2] Which of cause is the generic advise to all SCSI related problems.
