Kernel freeze?

I rebuilt my kernel for my multia, so I could have sound (and some other
stuff, nfs, smb, etc..etc..). So I then tell it to boot sda2:mykernel.gz
But it freezes at the end of the unzip. I dunno, do I have to rebuild MILO?
This is the same kernel version as was being used before (2.0.27)...

Also, did anyone notice that the multia is just plain slow? I have 32
megs in mine and I swear my 486 w/24 megs seems faster in X, faster at
compiling, faster disk access (even with the same disk). I ran byte unix
benchmarks on it and it came in at 2.3 average (my dual 133 came to like 24 or
something), with the only real nice figure being ''double'' arithmetic
(floating point). are there any tricks to making it seem faster? Otherwise,
this thing might become an NFS rooted xterminal (except X draws so slow its not
even funny) Anyway, thanks to all those who sent me the irq/port/dma info on
the MSS compat. in the UDB (which btw, I was never given a manual for)
