C compiler for kernel

Hello,

I know this is a bit off-topic, but maybe someone may help me.

I think gcc-2.7.2.1 is slow on Alpha (which is not really a problem), and
produces slow code (which is more annoying). Am I right in these
assumptions ?

If yes, does another C compiler exist, which would be better ? May it even
compile properly the linux kernel ? (This is the least probable, as there
must be a reason if the kernel does not compile cleanly on 2.7.0 and requires
2.7.2.1).

Also, why should gcc not support "alpha-unknown-linux" if not patched by
RedHat ? Is this under work, or neglected ?
