Maybe this is a good time to introduce myself and my most loved toy project
to the Alpha list ...

I am Andreas Beck, student of physics and one of the project coordinators
of the Linux GGI Project.

GGI is intended to be the Linux General Graphics Interface. As I am very new
to the Alpha world, I have not yet dared to convert our kernel-part of
the system to my brandnew toy. I wanted to learn a bit more about it first.

But as I see how much problems graphics on Alpha makes, I think it would be
a good idea to push the project over to the Alpha world now.

As GGI does not need the BIOS of the graphics card at all, even Cards
which are not supported by the firmware would work. Only problem is that
you would need to "fly blind" until GGI comes up, but I think this is
better than nothing. Maybe it could even be integrated into MILO, so
you would have it relatively early.

The information about it on my homepage is quite out of date, though the
general concepts are still valid and you will find a quite recent series
of overheads from the GGI presentation at the Linux Kongress 1997.

More up to date info can be found at the ggi-homepage :
http://synergy.foo.net/~ggi/

Just to make clear - no, we don't have Fire GL drivers yet, but if somebody
who is a real kernel hacker would take the challenge of porting the KGI
part to Alpha, any driver available for GGI-Intel should work on the Alpha.

So if there is to be a GGI driver for a card, it is there for all
architectures.

Any volunteers to help us ? Please join our mailing-list. Information
on how to do this can be found on the above mentioned websites.

CU,Andy
