Thank you very much for the well meaning advice but when I said freeze
I meant total freeze! :-) The vt's crash too, no keyboard diodes,
nothing.
If I had been able to check the logs on the other vt's I figure I'd be
home free. No this is more like a failure in the kernel PCI handling
although I honestly can't see what. I've never seen the kernel crash
without errors!
A friend came to the rescue with a RedHat installation on a harddisk
so the problem is no longer pressing but I wonder wether the this is
not still significant. After the installation, when I try to ifconfig
a PCI network card (NE2000 or Digital(de4x5)) the same crash
occurs. No keyboard, no vt, the entire machine stops. Theoretically
(as far as I know) this can only happen if the Card causes an
interrupt to a piece of Linux Code which never returns.
For now I will solve the problem by getting an EISA network adapter
but PCI shouldn't be a problem. I'll try to figure out what's going
on...
