RH 5.0 and DAT

I just installed RH 5.0 and can't get my SCSI
DAT to work. Under RH 4.2 the /dev/tape was linked
to /dev/st0 and I could use tar, e.g.,

tar -cvf /dev/tape <files>

Under RH 4.2 I could NOT use tar directly
with /dev/st0 (??).

Now tar doesn't work at all with either
device name, although the DAT is recognized
by the kernel upon bootup. I must admit
I didn't try tar with the DAT before I used
the supposedly nifty BRU--well that didn't
recognize anything I had installed!!

Any clues, any help would be greatly appreciated.

(I have tried MAKEDEV st0, then relink to /dev/tape,
but it didn't help. I have also consulted the SCSI
and TAPE HOWTO's to no avail.)
