DEC multia dialing out with ppp...

Hi,
I just recently get a DEC multia 166 with RH5.0 already on it. The person
I got it from had it confi'd for the eth0 device. I can't use ethernet,
so I have to use ppp to get on the net. I finally got the modem (USR
28.8 Sportster) to dial out, but it hangs up everytime right away. I have
the kdebug option on with pppd, and in my logs I get this everytime right
before it hangs up:
May 13 00:55:47 alpha pppd[651]: Serial connection established.
May 13 00:55:47 alpha chat[654]: CONNECT -- got it
May 13 00:55:48 alpha pppd[651]: Using interface ppp0
May 13 00:55:48 alpha pppd[651]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/modem
May 13 00:55:51 alpha pppd[651]: Remote message: Login Succeeded
May 13 00:55:51 alpha pppd[651]: ioctl(SIOCADDRT) device route: Network is
unreachable
May 13 00:55:51 alpha pppd[651]: Hangup (SIGHUP)
May 13 00:55:51 alpha pppd[651]: Modem hangup
May 13 00:55:51 alpha pppd[651]: Connection terminated.
I have tried everything I can think of and it still hangs up everytime.
I am using the default chat scripts that come with RH5.0
(ppp-on/ppp-off/ppp-on-dialer). Here are the options I am using with
pppd:
exec /usr/sbin/pppd debug lock modem crtscts /dev/modem 38400 \
asyncmap 0 escape FF kdebug 0 $LOCAL_IP:$REMOTE_IP \
netmask $NETMASK defaultroute connect $DIALER_SCRIPT
I have tried it without the defaultroute, but it still does not work. I
was reading through the ppp-howto and ppp-faq, and it said that you can
only have one defaultroute set...and that if you have an ethernet device,
the defaultroute may be pointing to it and you have to change it. The
file I believe is /etc/sysconfig/network. It had GATEWAY and GATEWAYDEV
set when I first got the machine because like I said, it was setup for
ethernet. I changed it to GATEWAY= and GATEWAYDEV=, but it still didn't
work. Can I just remove those lines, or do I need them? Also, should I
have NETWORKING=no or yes in that file? If anyone could help, I would
greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
