I had a similar problem with PPP, though pppd didn't nose
dive afterwards - it just hung around like nothing was wrong. In my case,
if I ifconfig the interface up just after ppp0 is connected to the serial,
everything goes through no problem. A bit of a pain, but hey, at
least it works.
Of course it still may be that the default route is already in the table,
but I doubt that would cause pppd to disconnect and terminate.
