hmm... sounds like there is some ifconfig hangin' round. On my machine
I've got the entries
ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.1
route add -net 192.168.0.0 eth0
route add default gw 192.168.0.3
in my /etc/rc.d/doit , so perhaps it helps to comment them out?

Silly idea: perhaps its the dialer-script that does the login, but not
the ppp-connection? I've had this 1ce, but...
