Proxy servers

I've been out of touch for a while, so may I ask what is the current wisdom
about proxy servers for Linux-Alpha boxes? What is recommended?

I'm currently running RedHat 4.0 on a DEC Multia (noname), and we want to
install proxying - web/ftp/telnet (maybe) access for outbound connections
only. (Yes, I know - upgrade my version of linux ...)
