Binutils and GCC on RedHat-6.0 problem -- XP1000

It's chicken and egg time. A developer trying out our new XP1000 box says
gprof seg-faults. I tried to rebuild it and configure complains the gcc is
bogus.

Anyone run into this? Any advice before I start the process of trying to
figure out the bug more specifically?

It complains that ld reports error 33 while trying to compile conftest.c.
