"Supported option" in which way? This is never safe and should be
impossible with only an override for people who know what they are
doing, at their own risk.

It is bad enough that MODVERSIONS isn't mandatory or even default.
Inserting modules into non-matching kernel is generally the easiest
way to get panics.
