Hi all,
I've been doing some more research into the 2.2.x crashes I am experiencing
running Apache or Mathopd as webserver, with about 1 hit/second - mildly
loaded server. It was suggested that this would be caused by a memory leak,
so I installed a cron-job mailing me a top every minute, and this is a
sample of what I've seen in those mails (maximum one minute before the crash):

As you can see this machine only serves as a webserver, and gets its data
via Samba from another machine. The behaviour is that it starts swapping
after a number of hours (sometimes 48, sometimes 2, quite irregular) and
then crashes horribly, totally freezing. This is probably not a hardware
issue (the machine is currently a HP Kayak SMP box with uniprocessor
kernel, and I've also tried a brand new HP Netserver 60) - unless it is a
HP specific one. The above top is from a 2.2.14 kernel, compiled today.
Every time, little memory seems to be free, little buffered, a _lot_
cached, and hardly any swap in use. But it crashes after lots of disk
activity. Any hints are very welcome. I don't see any userspace process
eating all the memory, does this suggest that it might be a kernel leak? If
so, why are only me and David Edwards suffering from it? David, does your
setup have lots (mine has 35000) symlinks in the document root of Apache?
Here are some more "last tops", each of them running a stock 2.2.13 kernel.
The last one is quite funny, there you will see that most of the processor
time is actually missing - a CPU time leak? ;-)
