2.3.39: IDE multwrite warnings

From: Frodo Looijaard (frodol@dds.nl)
Date: Sun Jan 16 2000 - 20:53:29 EST

Hi folks,

I usually use 2.2 kernels, but today I booted 2.3.39 to test something.
Everything went smooth, until I set multiple sector count on using hdparm.
The result: lots of warnings, but fortunately no filesystem corruption.

The warning message:
  Jan 16 23:07:30 arda kernel: hda: multwrite: count=2, current=0
This is repeated many times, usually about 10 times for each read/write.
It is emitted for both /dev/hda and /dev/hdc. There are no slave
devices on either IDE bus. The warnings stopped comming when I did
a `hdparm -m0' on both devices.

Below data is generated after booting kernel 2.2.14 and doing the
hdparm settings:

   hdparm -c3 -m16 -u1 /dev/hda
   hdparm -c3 -m16 -u1 /dev/hdc

Under 2.2.14, there are no warnings, and the harddisks seem to work
quite well (though /dev/hdc is much slower than expected, even though
I set it to UDMA32 using software).

The kernel is stock 2.3.39 with the newest i2c and lm_sensors stuff
patched in. Those patched do not touch the IDE subsystem in any way.
If confirmation is needed, I can try without those patches too.

Thanks,
  Frodo
