Problems with 2.2.15pre2 and SMC card

I have just compiled the 2.2.15pre2 kernel with the SMC driver built into the
kernel (ie not as a module). Unfortunately on bootup I apparently have 8 SMC
cards...(see output from /var/log/messages below). Sadly the machine in
question only actually has 1!

Actually this problem has been reported in the various Donald Becker network card
mailing lists a number of times for the recent versions of many of his
drivers, but no fix ever appeared. If the drivers are compiled as a
module I seem to recall that this doesn't happen - but then that isn't a very
useful fix is it?
