I have a few (two "creative") IDE CD-ROM drives that are exceptions to that.
You can call them propietary, but they _are_ IDE devices. I've actually
never tried putting one of them in a linux machine. (They are part of
"The Archive" (tm) along with a few other oddities of (computer) nature.)
