Something you could try is dosfsck. It may be able to tell you what the
problem is. It you run it with the -v option, it will report what it
finds but not attempt any repair.
The latest version is on your sunsite mirror, directory
system/filesystems/dosfs, in dosfstools-*.tar.gz
