Hmm.. Sounds like maybe you did a "make oldconfig/xconfig" and didn't
notice that you need to enable CONFIG_IDE which is a new option due to the
re-organization of the block device tree.

If CONFIG_IDE is missing, then none of the IDE drivers will be compiled
in..
