Are you setting:
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEPCI=y
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEDMA=y
CONFIG_IDEDMA_AUTO=y
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_PIIX=y
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_PIIX_TUNING=y
??
If you have not set these options, the kernel can not correctly setup
transfer rates. If you have done the above, then I need to go to Maxtor.
